Bridge of Blessings The mission of Bridge of Blessings is to provide temporary financial assistance to qualified individuals in the North Texas area who are undergoing treatment for breast, ovarian, uterine, or endometrial cancer. It is our vision that everyone fighting this battle should have the peace of mind that their most essential financial needs are met, so they can focus all their energies on getting well. Although a multitude of successful organizations with a focus on these types of cancer exist, the concentration thus far has been primarily on research and early detection. Bridge of Blessings feels it has a unique vision for those who have already been diagnosed. Many individuals, particularly those unable to work as they undergo treatment, face tremendous stress from financial burdens - stress that could compromise their recovery. Our goal is to eliminate this unnecessary hardship. No one should have to make a decision between receiving life saving treatment and being able to meet the most basic needs of their family.

Gilda’s Club North Texas Gilda’s Club North Texas has received a grant from the Dallas County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to assist with education and outreach to members of Dallas County minority communities who are living with breast cancer. This grant will greatly enhance our efforts to reach Hispanic, African-American and Asian women with information about breast health and the value of social and emotional support when cancer is in the family. In addition, Komen Dallas’s grant will partially underwrite vital education, transportation, support and patient navigation programs for women who are living through a breast cancer experience, so we can continue to offer them services completely free of charge. The mission of Gilda’s Club North Texas is to provide a non-residential meeting place, where people with cancer and their families and friends can join with others to build social and emotional support as a supplement to medical care free of charge. Gilda’s Club North Texas serves all people with any type of cancer; however, approximately 51% of our female membership is comprised of women who have received a breast cancer diagnosis. Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program The Dallas County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® contributed up to 25% of net revenue to the Komen Grants Program. This is an exciting year for Komen’s Grants Program. Building on 27 years of funding research to find the causes and cures of breast cancer, Komen announces four new research funding opportunities, an important focus on speeding the translation of research discoveries to reduce breast cancer incidence and mortality within the next decade, and a completely redesigned system for application and peer review. In addition to funding breast cancer research, Komen and their Affiliate Network fund non-duplicative, community-based grants that translate the findings from research into breast health education and seek to enhance the availability of breast cancer screening and treatment for the medically underserved. Since its inception in 1982, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has supported virtually every major advance in breast cancer research over the past 27 years, with research investments to date of more than $300 million. Komen remains the nation's largest private provider of funds for breast cancer research and community outreach programs.
Methodist Health Systems The Methodist Health System Program, in conjunction with local congregational and community organizations, seeks to provide breast health education and screening mammography services to the medically under-served population of Dallas County. The goal of this program is to provide accessibility of these services at locations convenient and familiar to the public. These services will be provided by the Methodist Mobile Mammography Unit and at either of the Methodist Women’s Imaging Centers. Special focus will be placed on attempting to reach the African-American, Hispanic and other minority populations in Dallas County. Additional funding is available to aid in the follow-up care of abnormalities that may be detected from the screening exam, or for clients that may be experiencing a breast problem which would require diagnostic imaging. Please contact Buffie Pleasants at (214) 947-1768 to request the Methodist Mobile Unit for an event or screening services or for questions concerning access to diagnostic.
Parkland Health & Hospital System Parkland Health & Hospital System (Parkland) implemented its Cancer Prevention & Intervention Program (CPIP) in 1990 to provide breast cancer screening, prevention and intervention services to Dallas County residents. Through its mobile mammography unit, CPIP provides mammography screenings, case management and breast education. The success of the program is contributed to the opportunity for the mobile unit to go into the neighborhoods of underserved women to make preventive care more easily accessible, to remove any economic barrier and to help detect the early stages of breast cancer and refer patients for further treatment. Parkland’s Cancer Prevention and Intervention Program will incorporate the Community Mammography Outreach Strategic Approach; this approach embodies Parkland’s mission to serve the uninsured, underinsured and medically underserved women in Dallas County who might otherwise not receive this critical health service and education. The Community Mammography Outreach Strategy Approach will provide a means for better understanding the mammography needs of underserved women in our community and facilitate a strategic collaboration with community businesses, services and organizations to reach those needs. Outreach efforts are coordinated through Parkland’s Community Oriented Primary Care Community Services Department. Parkland Health and Hospital System Patient Navigator The Breast Clinic at Parkland Health and Hospital System provides care to medically underserved breast cancer patients in Dallas, TX. Navigating the system from presentation to diagnosis to treatment can be physically, psychologically, and emotionally overwhelming. A patient navigator is a specially trained member of the breast cancer treatment team who can help guide patients through the maze of necessary procedures while simultaneously providing emotional support. They are available to answer questions and provide continuity of care to the breast cancer patient. Additionally, they can help identify patients who qualify for clinical trials integral to the advancement of our knowledge of breast cancer.
Planned Parenthood of North Texas Planned Parenthood of North Texas (PPNT) is committed to breaking down barriers to health care and education by providing cancer screening and care to Dallas County families, regardless of their social economic circumstances. Richardson Regional Medical Center/ Center for Women’s Health The Asian Breast Health Outreach Project empowers the Asian community of Dallas County with the knowledge and implementation of the early detection of breast cancer by providing educational seminars and screening mammograms for Asian women. Barriers of language, fear, lack of information and sometimes means, keep these women underserved. Our seminars are conducted by physicians, nurses, or project’s staff who speaks their native language and our breast health literature are language specific. Screening mammograms and referrals are provided at no cost through the Center for Women’s Health at the Richardson Regional Medical Center for low-income, medically underserved Asian women in Dallas County. By minimizing cultural, financial, and language barriers for Asian women, we hope to increase the number of women participating in the early detection of breast cancer.
Small Pearls of Hope The goal of Small Pearls of Hope is to assist women who reside in Dallas County, who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are experiencing financial distress. We assist them financially and provide means of emotional support. The measure of our success will be based upon the number of countless women, and indirectly their children and families, we are able to assist financially with their day to day living expenses in their time of need.
UT Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas/Center for Breast Care UT Southwestern University Hospitals & Clinics, Breast Imaging Services extends its l mobile mammography unit to local communities to provide digital mammography screening and breast cancer awareness and education to uninsured women residing in Dallas County, in an effort to increase utilization of mammography as a screening tool. This project targets women in minority communities who might not otherwise participate in regular, periodic breast cancer screening. In conjunction with local community advocates, mobile mammography screening events are organized and offered to the public at local pharmacies, grocery stores, recreation centers, churches, college campuses, and many other community-based locations. YWCA Women’s Health Services Since 1990, the YWCA Women’s Health program has promoted the early detection of breast cancer through community-based services targeting medically underserved women. The goal of the program is to empower women to follow through with regular mammograms by overcoming barriers created by a lack of insurance, a lack of transportation, and limited English proficiency. Services include free mammograms, diagnostic follow-ups, and transportation assistance to women ages 35-64. The program uses YWCA Patient Navigators to guide women through the health care system and connect them with appropriate resources and supports. The program focuses on education, providing breast self-examination training and breast health education through community outreach events. Believing that lives are saved through early detection, YWCA Women’s Health is committed to providing a coordinated continuum of services to at-risk women in Dallas County. |
